About trails in India
India covers almost every kind of route, from sea-level backwater rides in Kerala to Himalayan roads in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh above 5,800 m. In Maharashtra's Sahyadri range, the Ratangad Fort Trek climbs from Ratanwadi to a basalt fort above the Bhandardara reservoir, and the Matheran Trek from Jumma Patti climbs forested slopes to the car-free hill station.
Kerala has a different pace. The Munnar Mattupetty Tea Country Drive winds through tea estates near 2,000 m in the Western Ghats, while the Muhamma Vembanad Lakeside Ride stays below sea level beside Vembanad Lake. The Top Slip Anamalai Forest Drive passes through a tiger reserve on the Tamil Nadu border. Farther afield, drives cross the Andaman Islands, Odisha and the Dooars foothills below Kalimpong.
- Best time to go
- October to March suits most of the country. The southwest monsoon (June to September) floods the Western Ghats and Kerala, but it is also the main season for Ladakh and Spiti, where high passes are usually open only from June to October.
- Terrain
- The difficulty mix leans moderate, with dozens of hard and extreme routes in the Himalaya. Surfaces run from coastal highway and backwater lanes to laterite fort paths, and on the Himalayan routes, broken tracks and scree above 5,000 m.
- Permits & access
- Rules vary by region. Parts of Ladakh and Himachal need Inner Line or Protected Area Permits. The Andaman Trunk Road through the Jarawa Reserve is open only to scheduled convoys. Matheran charges an entry tax, and tiger reserves such as Anamalai issue passes at their check posts.
