About trails in Italy
Italy's routes lean toward serious cycling and mountain hiking, with most rated moderate or hard. In the Aosta Valley, the Tour du Mont Blanc Bikepacking Route leaves Courmayeur on a 175 km extreme circuit around the highest massif in the Alps. In the Dolomites, the Puez to Passo Gardena Traverse crosses the limestone plateau of the Puez-Odle Nature Park above 2,600 m, and Monte Grappa rises steeply above the Brenta valley in Veneto.
The south trades glaciers for sea views. The Amalfi Coast Long Trek links cliffside villages over 67 km from Atrani, and Sicily's coast between Capo Gallo and San Vito lo Capo offers a hard multi-day walk. Road cyclists will find classic climbs in Piedmont and Friuli, gravel roads in Tuscany and Liguria's steep Apennine valleys.
- Best time to go
- June to September is the season for the Alps and Dolomites, when mountain huts are open; spring and autumn are better for Liguria, the Amalfi Coast and Sicily, which get very hot in July and August.
- Terrain
- Expect steep switchback climbs, rocky alpine paths and coastal stairways, with the highest routes approaching 2,900 m.
- Permits & access
- Many historic town centers have ZTL limited-traffic zones enforced by camera, so drivers should park outside them; book mountain huts ahead in summer.
