About trails in Jammu and Kashmir
The routes in Jammu and Kashmir sit in some of the most dramatic and sensitive terrain in the Himalaya. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is the classic: a 147 km route from the Sonamarg side through a string of alpine lakes and over passes above 4,100 m, rated extreme on this site for its length and altitude. Farther south, the Warwan Valley trail and Kishtwar to Warwan - Chenab Divide reach one of the most isolated valleys in the Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan ranges, climbing near 3,780 m.
Northwest of Srinagar, drives toward the Line of Control in Kupwara climb over mountain passes such as Firkiyan Gali, and Chowkibal to Teetwal - Mountain Route descends to the Kishanganga (Neelum) river. The Mushkoh Valley via Kaubal Gali is a long off-road expedition through high meadows.
- Best time to go
- July to September is the main window for the Great Lakes trek and the high passes, which are usually snowbound from late October into May or June. Spring and autumn suit lower valley drives.
- Terrain
- Expect high-altitude meadows, moraine, snow patches and rough mountain tracks reaching about 4,160 m. Every route here is moderate or harder, and acclimatization matters.
- Permits & access
- Border areas near the Line of Control are controlled by the army and local administration, so check permit requirements before you go and carry original photo ID for checkposts. The Great Lakes trek passes several army checkpoints where trekkers register.
