About trails in Canada

Canada's routes stretch from the Pacific to Newfoundland. In British Columbia, the Hanes Valley Trail to Grouse Mountain is a hard 22 km crossing of the North Shore mountains above Vancouver, with a boulder-field climb to the ski area. In Alberta's Kananaskis Country, the Mist Mountain and Hot Springs Loop climbs past 3,000 m in the Front Ranges of the Rockies.

Ontario adds the Western Uplands Backpacking Trail, Day 2, a lake-and-forest stage in Algonquin Park, and Quebec contributes long rail-trail rides such as the Parc Linéaire des Bois-Francs Ride. On the Atlantic side, the Norris Point Lookout Trail, Gros Morne is a short climb above Bonne Bay. Road trips follow the St. Lawrence on Route 138, the Okanagan valley and the Yellowhead Highway to Prince Rupert.

Best time to go
July to September is best for mountain and backcountry trails, since snow often lingers into June; late spring brings blackflies and mosquitoes in Ontario and Quebec forests, and fall color peaks in late September and early October.
Terrain
Mostly easy and moderate paved paths, rail trails and forest trails, with hard mountain hikes in the Rockies and Coast Mountains reaching just over 3,000 m.
Permits & access
National parks such as Gros Morne require a Parks Canada pass, Kananaskis requires a Conservation Pass per vehicle, and Algonquin backcountry trips need a camping permit; carry bear spray in western mountains.
