About trails in France

France's routes balance coastal walking, lowland cycling and high mountains. In Brittany, the Crozon Peninsula Walks cover 117 km of cliff paths and headlands on the Atlantic, and the Gulf of Morbihan offers easy rides from Vannes. In the Pyrenees, the Néouvielle Descent via the Brèche drops from a granite ridge above 3,000 m through a lake-studded nature reserve.

The Alps contribute the Hautes-Alpes High Pass Hike and walks in Haute-Savoie, while the Vosges Mountain Ride climbs forested slopes in Grand Est. For longer outings, the Oise to Nord Seven-Day Tour crosses northern France over 444 km, and Champagne vineyards frame rides in the Marne. Overseas, the island of Réunion adds coastal rides and drives around Saint-Denis and Saint-Paul.

Best time to go: June to September is best for Alpine and Pyrenean routes; spring and autumn suit Provence, Occitania and the Loire, while Réunion is driest from May to November and prone to cyclones from January to March.

Permits & access: Driving in Paris and other low-emission zones requires a Crit'Air sticker, and parts of the Néouvielle reserve road are restricted in summer, with shuttles serving the lakes.
