About trails in Nepal
Nepal's routes here run from classic teahouse treks to overland expeditions across the far west. In the Khumbu, the Everest Basecamp trail and Go Kyoo Lake trek climb through Sagarmatha National Park to above 5,200 m, while the Panchase Trek from Pokhara is a lower forested ridge walk with views of the Annapurna range. The Rara Lake Hike from Jumla Airport reaches the country's largest lake in Rara National Park.
Karnali Province dominates the off-road listings. The Simikot to Limi Valley Expedition and Nayalu pass - Tumling (limi valley) cross passes around 5,000 m in Humla, near the Tibetan border, with views toward Mount Kailash. The Upper Mustang Trail follows the Kali Gandaki into the arid former kingdom of Lo, and the Chisapani to Kalikot - Karnali Traverse follows Nepal's longest river.
- Best time to go
- October to November and March to May are the main seasons. The June to September monsoon brings landslides, leeches and cloud, though Upper Mustang and Humla lie partly in rain shadow, and high passes are often snowbound in winter.
- Terrain
- Rough mountain trails, rocky jeep tracks and glacial moraine climb to about 5,280 m. The route mix is heavily hard and extreme, and altitude acclimatization is essential.
- Permits & access
- Upper Mustang, Humla's Limi Valley and parts of Dolpa are restricted areas that require a special permit arranged through a registered trekking agency, usually for at least two trekkers. The Everest region requires a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, and routes into Tibet need separate Chinese permits.
