About trails in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom's routes are mostly walks, spread across England, Scotland and Wales. In Snowdonia, Moel Hebog from Beddgelert climbs to about 780 m for views over the Snowdon massif. Scotland adds Conic Hill, Balmaha, a short, steep climb on the Highland Boundary Fault above Loch Lomond, and St Cuthbert's Way to Jedburgh, a 28 km section of the long-distance path through the Cheviot foothills and the Scottish Borders.

Southern England has gentler options: the Chequers and Chilterns Walk from Wendover crosses chalk hills and beech woods, and the North Norfolk Coast Path, Day 2 follows salt marsh and shingle. Cyclists can ride the Elmbridge to Greenwich Thames Ride along the river through London, while drivers in Wales can take the Tywi Valley Llandeilo Drive or the longer Skenfrith to Merthyr Valleys Drive.

Best time to go
May to September gives the longest days and driest weather, though rain is possible at any time. Mountain walks in Wales and Scotland can see snow and strong winds from November to March.
Terrain
Most routes are lowland paths and bridleways under 400 m, with steeper, rockier ground on the Welsh and Scottish hills near 800 m. Paths are often muddy after rain.
Permits & access
Public rights of way allow walking across private farmland in England and Wales, and Scotland has a general right of responsible access. Most trailheads are reachable by train or bus, but parking at popular spots such as Balmaha fills early.
