About trails in Rajasthan
Rajasthan's routes cross the Thar Desert in the west and the Aravalli Range that runs diagonally through the state. From Jaisalmer, the Jaisalmer to Tanot - Border Road heads 120 km across open desert to the Tanot temple near the Pakistan border, and the Western Rajasthan Roadtrip strings together more than 1,000 km of desert towns. Around Jodhpur, the Nathrau Sand Dunes route is a short off-road run into the sand.
The Aravallis add height and forts. The Desuri to Kumbhalgarh Fort Drive climbs to the walled fortress in Rajsamand district, and Abu Road to Guru Shikhar - Mount Abu rises to about 1,640 m near the highest point in the range. Near Jaipur, the Jaipur Aravalli Ridge Run (JARR-140) is a 193 km off-road route along the rocky hills around the city.
- Best time to go
- October to March is the time to go, with clear days and cool nights. April to June is dangerously hot in the desert, often above 45 °C, and the July to September monsoon can flood low roads in the east.
- Terrain
- Most routes are flat desert highway or sand, with the Aravalli climbs to Mount Abu and Kumbhalgarh the main exception. Difficulty is mostly easy, with a few moderate hill and off-road sections.
- Permits & access
- Kumbhalgarh Fort and Ranthambhore National Park charge entry fees, and park safaris must be booked in advance. Areas close to the Pakistan border may have military checkpoints and restrictions, so carry ID.
