Trails in Maharashtra

Maharashtra's hills are the Sahyadri, the northern Western Ghats, and their crest is lined with Maratha-era hill forts. The Rajgad Fort Trek via Gunjavane climbs to about 1,270 m near Pune on the fort that was Shivaji's early capital, and the Ratangad Fort Trek starts from Ratanwadi near Bhandardara in the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. For a shorter outing near Mumbai, the Takmak Fort Trek rises from the plains of Palghar.

The ghats that cut through the escarpment make famous drives. The Malshej ghat trail and Tamhini Ghat Trail cross forested passes that fill with waterfalls in the rains, while the MSH4 The Konkan cost road follows the Arabian Sea shoreline for 650 km toward Goa, past creeks, beaches and fishing towns.
