About trails in Trentino-Alto Adige

Italy's northernmost region is split between German-speaking South Tyrol and Italian Trentino, and the Dolomites run through both. The Puez to Passo Gardena Traverse crosses the stony high plateau of the Puez-Odle Nature Park above Val Badia, reaching about 2,640 m, while the Val di Fassa High Plateau Hike is a short walk at nearly 2,900 m among the peaks of Fassa. Cyclists can tackle the Val Pusteria to Cortina Dolomites Ride, a 70 km climb from the Puster Valley into the Veneto.

Lower down, the Adige valley and its orchards shape the Spormaggiore to Ora Adige Valley Loop and the Truden to Bolzano Mountain Drive. In the far south, the Monte Brione Circuit, Riva del Garda loops a small ridge above the northern tip of Lake Garda, a very different Mediterranean-flavored landscape.

Best time to go: Mid-June to late September is the season for high trails, when mountain huts and lifts operate and passes are clear of snow. Lake Garda and the valley rides are pleasant in spring and autumn, when high routes are still snowy or closed.
Terrain: Most routes rate hard, with rocky alpine paths, scree and long climbs reaching almost 2,900 m. Valley rides follow paved cycle paths and quiet roads through vineyards and apple orchards.
Permits & access: Many high routes depend on seasonal lifts and mountain huts, so check opening dates and book huts ahead in July and August. Valley towns are well connected by regional trains and buses.
