About trails in Veneto

Veneto rises from the lagoon around Venice to the Dolomites, and its trails cover that whole climb. The toughest is the Monte Grappa Hike in Valbrenta, a long, steep route above the Brenta valley to a massif known for its First World War memorial. In the Dolomites near Belluno, the Val Zoldana Hike, Longarone climbs toward 1,900 m above the Piave valley.

The foothills are gentler. The Chiuppano to Lugo Hill Walk crosses the prealpine slopes of Vicenza province, and the Durlo History and Legends Walk is a short village loop in the Chiampo valley. On the plain, the Padua Riverside Cycling Loop follows the city's canals and river embankments, and the Bussolengo to Quinzano Ride heads from the Adige valley toward the hills north of Verona. The Cavallino-Treporti Lagoon Drive runs along the edge of the Venetian lagoon.

Best time to go: May to October suits the mountain routes, and high trails around Val di Zoldo are usually free of snow from June. Spring and early autumn are the pleasant seasons on the plain, where July and August are hot and humid.
Terrain: Most routes are moderate. Above the plain, expect steep limestone paths and mule tracks to about 1,900 m, while the lagoon and riverside routes are dead flat and paved.
Permits & access: The mountain trailheads are easiest to reach by car, though Longarone has a station on the Belluno rail line. Venice, Treviso and Verona airports are all within a short drive of the plain routes.
