About trails in Liguria

Liguria rises sharply from the sea into the Ligurian Apennines, and its routes stay mostly in that steep hinterland. Around Cairo Montenotte in the Bormida valley, the Cairo Montenotte MTB Loop and the Cairo Montenotte Calanchi Enduro Loop use forest singletrack and eroded clay badlands. The Osiglia to Casanova Ridge Loop is a hike above the Osiglia reservoir, reaching about 1,200 m.

Road cyclists have the Albisola Gran Fondo Climb, which heads straight up from the coast at Albisola Superiore into the hills behind Savona, a typical Ligurian climb that leaves the sea behind within minutes. Further east, the Rovegno Val Trebbia Ride explores the upper Trebbia valley inland from Genoa, a quiet area of wooded slopes and stone villages.

Best time to go: Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild temperatures on the coast and clear views. Summer is hot and busy near the sea, and heavy autumn rain can cause flooding and trail damage.
Terrain: Expect steep ground everywhere: climbs from sea level to above 1,200 m within short distances, with rocky, loose trails. Half the routes are hard.
Permits & access: Access is straightforward by train along the coast, then by road into the valleys. Hikers and riders should carry water, as springs on the ridges can be dry in summer.
