About trails in Lazio
Lazio's routes start at the edge of Rome and head for the volcanic hills that ring the city. To the southeast, the Nemi and Rocca di Papa Ride climbs the Alban Hills past the crater lake at Nemi into the Castelli Romani. The Artena to Rocca Priora Castelli Climb approaches the same hill towns from the other side, and both are serious climbs of around 750 to 840 m for road cyclists.
North of the capital, the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrim road to Rome, appears twice: the Via Francigena Viterbo to Vetralla walking stage through the Tuscia countryside, and the tougher Via Francigena Bracciano to Vetralla MTB, which leaves Lake Bracciano on gravel. The Rome to Formello Ride and Rome to Campagnano Ride take road cyclists out through the Veio regional park onto quiet rural lanes.
- Best time to go
- April to June and September to October bring mild weather. July and August are hot even in the hills, so start early, and short winter days limit the longer rides.
- Terrain
- Expect rolling volcanic hills, tufa gorges and cobbled climbs into hill towns, topping out around 840 m. Most rides are rated hard for their sustained gradients rather than their height.
- Permits & access
- Regional trains from Rome run to Viterbo and Bracciano, which suits one-way Via Francigena stages, and lines to Frascati and Albano serve the Castelli Romani. Walkers can collect Via Francigena stamps in a pilgrim credential.
