About trails in Tuscany

Tuscany's routes favor two wheels, from white gravel roads to coastal singletrack. The Poggibonsi Chianti Off-Road Tour covers 109 km of unpaved tracks between vineyards, olive groves and hill villages, reaching about 900 m. On the island of Elba, the Elba Sentiero 252 MTB Ride follows rocky Mediterranean scrub trails above Portoferraio.

Further south, the Orbetello Lagoon Morning Ride loops around the brackish lagoon and the causeways leading to Monte Argentario in the Maremma. Along the coast, the hills behind Quercianella offer short, punchy mountain bike loops above the sea south of Livorno, and a drive links Livorno with the beaches of Calambrone. In the far north, the Lunigiana region adds a mountain road toward the Apennine passes.

Best time to go
April to June and September to October are ideal; July and August bring heat and heavy coastal traffic, and winter rain can make gravel and dirt tracks muddy.
Terrain
Routes are moderate to hard, with short steep climbs, loose gravel strade bianche and rocky coastal trails, topping out near 900 m.
Permits & access
Elba is reached by car ferry from Piombino, and many Tuscan town centers have ZTL restricted-traffic zones that drivers must avoid.
