About trails in Australia

Australia's routes range from tropical Queensland to temperate Tasmania. The Larapinta Trail End to End is a 239 km walk along the West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs, one of the country's great desert treks. In Victoria, the Mount Buller Australian Alpine Epic MTB is a well-known singletrack descent from the alpine resort, and the Sugarloaf Peak Cathedral Range Hike tackles a rocky ridge scramble near Taggerty.

Queensland offers the Rodds Bay to Agnes Water 4WD route along sand tracks near the Great Barrier Reef coast and the Imbil State Forest 4WD Loop in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. In Tasmania, the Preminghana Beach Walk follows the wild west coast near Marrawah. For long drives, the Pacific Ocean Motorcycle Tour heads up the New South Wales coast from Sydney.

Best time to go
The best season depends on the region: May to September for the Northern Territory and tropical Queensland, and November to April for Victoria's high country and Tasmania. Avoid the Larapinta in summer, when heat can be extreme.
Terrain
Terrain covers desert ridges, coastal sand, forest trails and alpine slopes up to about 1,600 m. Difficulty is mixed, with hard mountain biking and 4WD tracks and the extreme Larapinta Trail at the top end.
Permits & access
Alpine resorts such as Mount Buller charge an entry fee in season, and many national parks require vehicle permits or campsite bookings. Remote 4WD and desert routes need plenty of water, fuel and recovery gear.
