About trails in Victoria
Victoria's routes lean toward hard mountain riding in the forests east of Melbourne. The Mount Buller Australian Alpine Epic MTB is the highlight: a long singletrack descent off the summit plateau of Mount Buller, which climbs above 1,600 m in the Victorian Alps. Closer to Melbourne, the Sugarloaf Peak Cathedral Range Hike is a short, steep scramble up rocky sandstone ridges in Cathedral Range State Park above the Acheron valley.
In West Gippsland, the Noojee to Mount Vesper Ride climbs from the Latrobe River valley through tall mountain-ash forest. The Sweetwater Forest Trails, Neerim offer a long day of 4WD and forest-track driving nearby. The easiest route is the Footscray to Flemington Walk, a flat inner-city stroll beside the Maribyrnong River.
- Best time to go
- November to April is the season for alpine riding at Mount Buller, which is under snow from about June to September. In summer, check fire danger ratings; forests and tracks can close on Total Fire Ban days.
- Terrain
- Most routes are hard. Expect rocky alpine singletrack up to about 1,640 m, loose forest roads and steep ridgeline scrambling. Only the Melbourne walk is truly easy.
- Permits & access
- Mount Buller charges a resort entry fee for vehicles during the snow season. Some forest tracks in Gippsland close seasonally over winter, so check Parks Victoria or Forest Fire Management Victoria before driving them.
