About trails in Queensland

Queensland's routes here stay in the state's populous southeast and central coast. Around Brisbane, the Brisbane River Loop via St Lucia is a flat riverside ride past the university, and the Brisbane to Upper Brookfield Hills Ride heads west into the steeper foothills toward the D'Aguilar Range. The Rainbow Beach to Brisbane Drive runs down from the Cooloola coast, gateway to the Great Sandy region.

Four-wheel drivers have two very different options. The Rodds Bay to Agnes Water 4WD follows sandy coastal tracks on the Discovery Coast north of Bundaberg, while the Imbil State Forest 4WD Loop climbs through the hilly pine and eucalypt forest of the Mary Valley behind the Sunshine Coast. The Mount Doongul Walk is an easy 6 km bushwalk.

Best time to go
April to September is the pick, with warm days, low humidity and less rain. Summer brings heat, storms and wet-season downpours that can close dirt tracks.
Terrain
Coastal flats, sand tracks and forest hills, with the highest point on these routes about 390 m. Difficulty ranges from easy walks to hard forest 4WD climbs.
Permits & access
Driving on Queensland national park beaches such as Cooloola requires a vehicle access permit, and camping in state forests and national parks must be booked. Tyre deflation and recovery gear are essential on sand tracks.
