About trails in Spain

Spain's routes lean toward hard mountain biking across its many sierras. In the Pyrenees of Aragon, trails around Cerler and Alto Gállego reach about 2,000 m, while the Collado Villalba to Cercedilla Ride climbs into the Sierra de Guadarrama north of Madrid. On the Costa Brava, the Roses Cap de Creus Enduro Loop crosses the rocky headland of Spain's easternmost point.

Andalusia offers gentler walking: the Gerald Brenan Trail Loop, Yegen is a short circuit in the Alpujarra villages on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada. Out in the Atlantic, the GR 132 Valle Gran Rey to Arure climbs from the terraced valley on La Gomera, and forest tracks on Tenerife add island riding. Castile, Navarre and the Valencian interior fill in with gravel roads and village routes.

Best time to go: Spring and autumn are ideal on the mainland; inland Andalusia and Castile are very hot in July and August, the Pyrenees are best from June to October, and the Canaries are rideable year-round.
Terrain: Mostly hard mountain bike and hiking routes on rocky tracks, forest roads and limestone sierras, with a high point of about 2,000 m.
Permits & access: Regional authorities can close forest tracks during high wildfire risk in summer, and natural parks such as Cap de Creus limit motor vehicles on some tracks; check local notices before riding or driving.
