Srinagar–Leh Highway

Added on 11 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The gentler road into Ladakh: about 420 km on NH1 from Srinagar up the Sindh valley to Sonamarg, over Zoji La (about 3,530 m) into Ladakh, through Drass and Kargil, then over Namika La and Fotu La (about 4,100 m, the highest point) to Lamayuru's 'moonland' and down the Indus to Leh. The climb is gradual, which makes it the easier way to acclimatise; Zoji La itself is narrow, unpaved and often muddy.

General Instructions

Zoji La is usually open from about April or May to November, closing with snow; traffic on the pass runs in convoys and timings change, so check before you go. Two riding days with a night in Kargil is comfortable. Fuel is easy to find at Sonamarg, Drass, Kargil and Khaltse.

Best time to go

Jul–Sep

July to September is the main window for the Great Lakes trek and the high passes, which are usually snowbound from late October into May or June. Spring and autumn suit lower valley drives.
