About trails in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes stretches from the Rhône valley around Lyon to the highest summits of the French Alps. The standout is the Tour Du Mont Blanc, a 144 km circuit around the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy and Switzerland, crossing passes above 2,600 m on the way. Also in Haute-Savoie, the Haute-Savoie Alpine Walk climbs to over 1,700 m, while the Annecy Town Walk circles the old town and lakeshore.

Lower down, the Villefranche Beaujolais MTB Loop rides through vineyard hills north of Lyon, and the Corbas to Valencin MTB Loop explores farmland just southeast of the city. The Isère Winter Trek is a moderate walk in the Pre-Alps, and the Drôme Short Ride offers an easy spin in the south of the region.

Best time to go: Mid-June to mid-September is the season for high Alpine routes such as the Tour du Mont Blanc; huts are generally open then and passes are mostly clear of snow. Lower routes around Lyon and the Drôme are good in spring and autumn.
Terrain: Terrain ranges from rolling vineyard hills to high mountain passes above 2,600 m. Difficulty climbs steeply with altitude, and the Tour du Mont Blanc is a demanding multi-day trek with large daily ascents.
Permits & access: Mountain huts on the Tour du Mont Blanc must be booked well in advance for July and August. Chamonix and Annecy are reachable by train, with bus links to trailheads.
