About trails in Colombia

Colombia's routes are shaped by the Andes, which split into three ranges running the length of the country. The Vía al Llano Descent from Bogotá drops from the high savanna above 3,000 m toward the eastern plains, and the Vuelta a Barrancas, Cundinamarca stays high on the Andean plateau. In Caldas, the Manizales to Chinchiná Coffee Drive winds through steep coffee farms in the Coffee Region.

In the south, the Huila Andes Highland Hike explores the hills around San Agustín, known for its archaeological park, and the Neiva Huila Morning Ride crosses the hot upper Magdalena valley. The Mocoa to Pasto - Andes Trail follows a narrow, largely unpaved mountain road from the Amazon foothills up into Nariño, climbing to above 3,200 m.

Best time to go: The Andean region is driest from December to March and again in July and August; the rainy seasons around April to May and October to November bring landslides on mountain roads.
Terrain: Moderate to hard routes with long climbs and descents, thin air above 3,000 m, and rough, unpaved mountain roads in the south.
Permits & access: No permits are required for these routes, but the Mocoa to Pasto road is narrow and prone to landslides, and the Vía al Llano can close after heavy rain; check road status before setting out.
