About trails in Vietnam

Vietnam's routes here run the length of the country. In the far north, the Hoàng Su Phì Rice Terraces Walk follows paths through terraced hillsides worked by ethnic minority communities near the Chinese border. Around the capital, the Sóc Sơn to Old Quarter Ride brings riders from the northern outskirts into central Hanoi.

In the south-central region, the Da Lat to Lak Highland Ride crosses the Central Highlands from the pine-covered Lâm Viên plateau at about 1,800 m to the lake country of Đắk Lắk. The Khánh Vĩnh to Nha Trang Ride drops from the hills to the coast, and the Tân Hưng Cái Vồn Delta Ride rolls along the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta.

Best time to go: In the north, September to early October brings golden terraces before harvest, and October to April is cooler and drier. The central coast gets heavy rain from about September to December, while the highlands and delta are driest from December to April.
Terrain: Mountain paths and terraced slopes in the north, winding highland roads up to about 1,800 m and flat delta lanes. Every route here rates moderate.
Permits & access: To ride a motorbike legally, foreigners need a license recognized in Vietnam. Mountain roads in the north can be cut by landslides in the rainy season, so check conditions before setting out.
