About trails in Sweden

Sweden's routes run from the farmland of Skåne in the south to Lapland above the Arctic Circle. The Jokkmokk Lapland Hike in Norrbotten climbs to nearly 1,000 m through Sami country, and the Furudal Fäbodstig Walk in Dalarna follows an old path between summer farms in the forest. The Umeå to Örnsköldsvik Drive heads south along the Gulf of Bothnia toward the High Coast.

Most rides are around the cities. The Härryda, Hindås and Rävlanda MTB Loop and the Kortedala to Partille MTB Loop use rocky forest trails outside Gothenburg, while the Götene to Timmersdala Evening Ride crosses farmland between Kinnekulle and Lake Vänern. In Skåne, the Skabersjö to Bokeberg Ride and the Hässleholm Threshold Road Loop cross open farmland.

Best time to go: June to August has long days and the warmest weather, and September is good for fall color in the north. Winter is dark and snowy, especially in Lapland, and mosquitoes can be bad in northern summer.
Terrain: Most terrain is low and gently rolling, under 450 m except in Lapland. Trails are generally moderate, with rocky, rooty forest paths on the harder mountain bike routes.
Permits & access: Sweden's right of public access, allemansrätten, lets you walk, cycle and camp on most land if you respect nature and landowners. Motor vehicles are not included, so off-road driving is only allowed on roads and tracks where it is permitted.
