About trails in Slovakia

Slovakia's routes are mostly hikes in the hills and mountains of the center and northwest. The Muránska Planina Loop from Tisovec explores the karst plateau of Muránska Planina National Park, with limestone cliffs, gorges and forest, and the Lysá pod Makytou Javorníky Hike climbs to about 960 m on the ridge along the Czech border.

In the south, the Medves Plateau Border Hike crosses a volcanic plateau on the Hungarian border, and the Hrdovická Hill Hike near Solčany is a shorter moderate climb above the Nitra valley, through vineyards and oak woods. On the Danube, the Dobrohošť Danube Ride follows the river dikes near the Gabčíkovo dam, a flat, easy ride with wide views over the water and wetlands. It is a good choice for families.

Best time to go: May to October is the best time, with June and September especially good for hiking. Winter brings snow to the mountains.
Terrain: Terrain is hilly to mountainous, topping out under 1,000 m. Most routes are moderate, with a harder climb onto the Muránska Planina plateau.
