About trails in Romania

Romania's routes head into the Carpathians, which arc through the middle of the country. The Bicaz Gorges and Lacu Roșu Loop is a hard 185 km ride from Piatra-Neamț through one of the country's most dramatic limestone canyons to the Red Lake. In Mureș county, the Bălăușeri to Saca Peak Off-Road Route climbs forest roads to close to 1,800 m in the volcanic Gurghiu Mountains.

In the southwest, the Feneș to Teregova Banat Hike crosses the hills of Caraș-Severin between mountain villages. Transylvania adds shorter outings, including a gentle walk in the hills near Cluj-Napoca and a road ride through the rolling countryside of Mureș county. Expect sheepfolds, beech forest and long stretches with few services between villages.

Best time to go
June to September is best for mountain routes; May and October are good shoulder months, while snow closes higher forest roads in winter.
Terrain
Mostly hard routes with long climbs on forest roads and mountain trails, reaching nearly 1,800 m.
Permits & access
A rovinieta road vignette is required for driving on national roads, and the Carpathians have a large brown bear population, so make noise on trails and keep food secured.
