About trails in Portugal

Portugal's routes span the mainland and its Atlantic islands. On Madeira, the Pico Arieiro Mountain Loop - Madeira climbs to about 1,800 m among the island's jagged volcanic peaks, and the Porto da Cruz Loop - Coastal Hills follows the steep north coast. In the Azores, the Horta Faial Island Hike explores the island facing Pico across the channel.

On the mainland, the Almoçageme to Ericeira Coastal Hike covers 29 km of cliffs and beaches north of Cabo da Roca, near Sintra. The Portalegre to Castelo de Vide Ride crosses the Serra de São Mamede in the Alentejo, and the Monchique to Alcoutim Algarve Off-Road Raid runs over 300 km from the Serra de Monchique east to the Guadiana river on the Spanish border.

Best time to go: April to June and September to October suit most routes. Madeira's peaks can be cloudy or wet at any time, and the Algarve and Alentejo interior are very hot in July and August.
Terrain: Steep volcanic island trails, sea-cliff paths and dry hill tracks reach about 1,800 m. Most routes rate hard because of sustained climbs and descents.
Permits & access: Madeira now charges non-residents a small fee on its official PR walking trails, and some trails close after storms. The Azores and Madeira are reached by flights from Lisbon and Porto.
