About trails in Mexico
Most of Mexico's routes here sit on the high central plateau, where even city rides start above 2,000 m. The Nevado de Toluca Summit Climb reaches about 4,640 m on the rim of the volcano whose crater holds the Sun and Moon lakes, a short but thin-air hike. The Mexico City to Tlayacapan Ride is a 151 km extreme road ride that crosses the mountains south of the capital into Morelos.
Farther north, the Matehuala Highland Road Ride crosses the dry altiplano of San Luis Potosí, and the Vencedores del Desierto Ride, Delicias rolls through Chihuahua farm country. The Atoyatempan Highland Hike explores the Puebla highlands, and the Querétaro Bernardo Quintana Drive is an urban loop through one of the Bajío's biggest cities.
- Best time to go
- October to April is the dry season in the central highlands, with clear mornings for volcano hikes. The rainy season from June to September brings afternoon storms, and the northern deserts are very hot in summer.
- Terrain
- High-altitude volcanic slopes, highland roads and desert plains, with routes topping out above 4,600 m. Altitude is the main challenge more than steepness.
- Permits & access
- Nevado de Toluca charges a park entry fee, and road access to the crater can be limited by weather. Acclimatize in Mexico City or Toluca before attempting the summit.
