About trails in Georgia

Georgia's routes here trace a line from the Greater Caucasus down to the Mtkvari valley. The Gergeti Glacier Trail to Altihut climbs from Stepantsminda past Gergeti Trinity Church toward the glacier on Mount Kazbek, reaching about 3,340 m. In the Lesser Caucasus, the Transcaucasian Trail Timotesubani to Zanavi is an easy 20 km stretch of the long-distance trail through forest near Borjomi.

Tbilisi has hills close at hand: the Tskneti to Vake Tbilisi Walk drops from a leafy mountain suburb on the slopes above the city into the Vake district, and the Tbilisi Isani Walk explores the neighborhoods of the east bank of the Mtkvari. The Dzegvi to Kaspi Villages Ride crosses Kartli farmland and villages west of Mtskheta, the old capital.

Best time to go: July to September is best for Kazbegi and the glacier trail, which is snowy the rest of the year. Tbilisi walks suit spring and autumn, as the city gets hot in midsummer.
Terrain: High alpine slopes and glacier approaches above 3,300 m contrast with forested low ranges and city hills. Difficulty runs from easy to hard.
Permits & access: Stepantsminda is reached from Tbilisi on the Georgian Military Road over the Jvari Pass, which can close in winter for snow and avalanches. Many nationalities can visit Georgia visa-free.
