About trails in Finland

Finland's routes are mostly bike rides, spread across the south coast, the lake district and Lapland. Around Helsinki, the Helsinki Viking Trail Ride and the Helsinki Region Ride follow bike paths through city parks and along the Gulf of Finland. On the west coast, the Lohtaja Coastal Trails Ride uses forest tracks near Kokkola, and the Turku Gravel Ride explores farmland and islands in Southwest Finland.

In the north, the Ylläs Fell Cycling Loop loops around the base of Ylläs, a fell known for skiing in winter and for gravel and forest trails in summer. The Kuopio to Lempäälä Lakeland Drive crosses more than 300 km of the Finnish Lakeland, and the Jyväskylä Winter Ride shows that some Finns ride year-round.

Best time to go: June to August has long, light days and mild weather; late August and September bring fall color in Lapland. Winter riding is possible but needs studded tires and warm gear.
Terrain: Terrain is low and gently rolling, with the highest routes under 350 m. Rides are mostly moderate, with gravel and forest tracks adding some effort.
Permits & access: Everyman's right, jokamiehenoikeus, allows walking and cycling on most land if you respect nature and property. Cities have extensive bike paths, and trains take bikes on many routes.
