About trails in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's routes center on Sofia and the mountains around it. The Vitosha Foothills Evening Ride climbs from the city to about 1,500 m on Vitosha, and the Iskar Gorge and Osenovlag Off-Road Loop follows tracks in the gorge where the Iskar River cuts through the Balkan Mountains north of Sofia, a rough route of river crossings, villages and forest climbs.

Southeast of the capital, the Ihtiman Sredna Gora to Sofia Drive crosses the Sredna Gora range, and the Gate of Trajan Off-Road Loop explores the hills near the pass where Byzantine emperor Basil II was defeated in 986. The Sofia to Plovdiv via Trakia Motorway links the capital with Bulgaria's second city through the Thracian plain, with the Rhodopes visible to the south.

Best time to go: May to October is the season, with September and October ideal for cooler weather and fall color. Winter brings snow to the mountains, and many off-road tracks become impassable.
Terrain: Terrain ranges from flat plains to mountain tracks near 1,500 m. Half the routes are hard, with rocky, steep off-road sections.
Permits & access: Driving on Bulgaria's national roads outside towns, including the Trakia Motorway, requires an electronic vignette, which can be bought online. Off-road routes on forest land may have restrictions, so check before riding.
