About trails in Austria

Austria's routes run from the Danube to the high Alps. The highest is the Regenstein Summit Hike from Winkeltal, a hard climb above 2,800 m in the Villgraten Mountains of East Tyrol, from a remote side valley to a rocky summit. Near Salzburg, the Wieserhörndl Hike, Krispl climbs a limestone peak in the Osterhorn group with views over the Salzkammergut.

Cyclists get two very different days. The Villach to Fresach Mitterberg Climb Loop in Carinthia climbs steadily out of the Drau valley past 1,250 m. The Danube Island to Klosterneuburg Ride follows the flat Danube Cycle Path from the Donauinsel in Vienna to the abbey town upstream. Drivers can try the Linz to Gampern Drive through the rolling farmland of Upper Austria toward the Attersee.

Best time to go: Late June to September is the window for alpine summits above 2,000 m, when paths are free of snow. The Danube and valley routes are good from April to October, and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms in the mountains.
Terrain: Expect steep alpine trails, rocky ridges and scree on the summit hikes, and paved cycle paths along the Danube. Every route is rated moderate or hard.
Permits & access: Austrian motorways and expressways require a vignette, sold as a sticker or digital version. ÖBB trains and regional buses reach most valleys, but East Tyrol's side valleys are easiest by car.
