Spreetshoogte Pass: Nauchas to Solitaire

Added on 14 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The district road D1275 drops off the edge of the Khomas Hochland escarpment at Spreetshoogte, with gradients of 1:4.5 to 1:6 that make it the steepest pass in Namibia. The road loses about 1,000 m of height in roughly 4 km and links the highlands with the Namib plains at Solitaire on the way to Sossusvlei.

General Instructions

Allow 1.5-2 hours for the drive. Engage low gear on the descent and check current conditions, as rain damage has at times made the pass 4x4-only. Fill up with fuel at Solitaire before heading into the desert.
