Spiti Valley Circuit
A cold-desert loop of about 620 km: from Shimla along the Sutlej through Kinnaur's cliff-cut roads to Nako and Tabo, up the Spiti valley to Kaza, then over Kunzum Pass (about 4,550 m) and down the notoriously rough Batal–Chhatru–Gramphu stretch to the Atal Tunnel and Manali. Expect narrow ledges above the river, landslide zones, broken tarmac, loose gravel and stream crossings.

General Instructions
Ride it clockwise (Shimla first) to acclimatise gradually. Kunzum and the Manali side usually open from about June to October; the Kinnaur side is open most of the year, weather permitting. Fill up at Kaza: fuel is scarce between Kaza and Manali. The Batal–Gramphu stretch is slow, rocky and full of water crossings: cross early in the day.

Best time to go
Jun–Sep
Mid-June to late September is the season for high passes. Spiti and Lahaul lie in a rain shadow and stay fairly dry during the monsoon, but the Kullu and Chamba approaches often get landslides in July and August. Sach Pass is usually snowbound from late October until June.
