Zoji La Pass Road

Added on 10 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The Srinagar–Leh highway's crossing of Zoji La (about 3,528 m) from Sonamarg to Drass, a narrow shelf road above Baltal that carries heavy army and truck traffic. It is closed by snow for much of the winter and avalanche-prone in spring: in March 2026 an avalanche between Zero Point and Minamarg killed seven people. The Zojila tunnel broke through in June 2026 and is due to open in early 2028.

General Instructions

Expect convoys and long waits behind trucks; never overtake on the narrow sections. Snow and avalanches close the pass from roughly late autumn to spring, and the road surface turns to slush and mud during the thaw.

Best time to go

Jul–Sep

July to September is the main window for the Great Lakes trek and the high passes, which are usually snowbound from late October into May or June. Spring and autumn suit lower valley drives.
