Van Zyl's Pass and the Marienfluss: Otjitanda to Otjinungwa

Added on 14 Oct 2026

Van Zyl's Pass is a 10-13 km rock-strewn descent off the Kaokoveld plateau, built in the 1960s, that can only be driven east to west. At the bottom the track turns north up the grassy Marienfluss valley to Otjinungwa on the Kunene River at the Angolan border.

General Instructions

Allow a full day from Otjitanda; the descent alone can take around two hours. Drive it only in a high-clearance 4x4 with low range, with someone guiding wheels over the rock steps, and carry fuel for the whole Kaokoland loop as there is none in the Marienfluss.
