Road to Tawang

The Northeast's great mountain ride: about 500 km from Guwahati across the Brahmaputra plains to Tezpur, into the hills at Bhalukpong and up through forested valleys to Bomdila and Dirang, over Sela Pass (about 4,170 m) with its lake, past the Jaswantgarh war memorial and down to Tawang and its 17th-century monastery. Mountain tarmac with steep gradients, tight hairpins and stretches broken by landslides.

Best time to go

Jun–Oct

October to March suits most of the country. The southwest monsoon (June to September) floods the Western Ghats and Kerala, but it is also the main season for Ladakh and Spiti, where high passes are usually open only from June to October.
