Panchavati Walk: Ramkund to Tapovan, Nashik

Added on 20 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

A walk through Panchavati, the old quarter of Nashik on the Godavari, which tradition identifies with the forest hermitage of the Ramayana. From the bathing ghat of Ramkund, it passes the black-stone Kalaram temple and the narrow Sita Gufa cave, then follows the river east to Tapovan, where Lakshmana is said to have cut off Surpanakha's nose, the story behind Nashik's name.

Best time to go

Oct–Feb

October to February is the most comfortable season, with clear skies after the rains. The June to September monsoon turns the ghats green but makes rock sections slippery and brings landslide risk, and April and May are hot.
