Manali–Leh Highway
India's classic high-altitude motorcycle road: about 430 km from Manali through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, then over Baralacha La, Nakee La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La (about 5,330 m, the highest point), past the tent camps of Sarchu and Pang, across the More Plains and down the Indus valley to Leh. Long stretches sit above 4,000 m, with broken tarmac, gravel, water crossings below the passes and the 21 hairpins of the Gata Loops.

General Instructions
Usually open from about June to mid-October, depending on snow clearance; check road status before setting off. Plan two or three riding days with nights at Jispa or Sarchu to acclimatise. There's no fuel between Tandi (near Keylong) and Karu, about 365 km: carry spare fuel. Start early: stream crossings below the passes rise through the day with snowmelt.

Best time to go
Jun–Sep
Mid-June to late September is the season for high passes. Spiti and Lahaul lie in a rain shadow and stay fairly dry during the monsoon, but the Kullu and Chamba approaches often get landslides in July and August. Sach Pass is usually snowbound from late October until June.
