Khardung La Pass Road

Added on 10 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The road from Leh over Khardung La (5,359 m by survey; the summit sign has long claimed 18,379 ft) to North Pullu and the Nubra valley. It's paved and maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (Project Himank), but single-lane bottlenecks, slush and washouts near the top, heavy tourist traffic and the altitude make it more demanding than it looks.

General Instructions

Acclimatise in Leh for at least two days first and don't linger on the summit. The pass can close temporarily after snow even in summer; start early to avoid afternoon traffic and slush.

Best time to go

Jun–Sep

June to September is the realistic window. The Manali and Srinagar highways usually open between May and June and close again with the October snows, and even in summer, nights on the high passes drop below freezing.
