Darkhad Depression Route

Added on 10 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

One of Mongolia's remotest drives: north-west from Mörön across the mountains into the Darkhad Depression, a 160 km basin of lakes, bogs and larch forest at about 1,600 m, to Tsagaannuur, the gateway to the Tsaatan reindeer herders of the taiga. It is well over 10 hours on rough, bumpy roads with river crossings and boggy ground; beyond Tsagaannuur only horses can go on.
