Col de l'Iseran (2,764 m) is one of the great Tour de France climbs. The classic side starts in Bonneval-sur-Arc: 13.4 km at an average 7.3%, gaining 977 m. Highest paved pass in the Alps. High point of the Route des Grandes Alpes. First Tour appearance: 1938 (about 8 crossings). Hail and a mudslide stopped the 2019 stage. Egan Bernal took yellow on the summit.

General Instructions

Season: Mid-June to late October. Carry a windproof layer for the descent, enough water and food for the climb, and check road status before you go. Descend with care: these are open roads shared with cars and motorbikes. At 2,764 m the summit can be near freezing even in summer.

Mid-June to mid-September is the season for high Alpine routes such as the Tour du Mont Blanc; huts are generally open then and passes are mostly clear of snow. Lower routes around Lyon and the Drôme are good in spring and autumn.
