A long mountain road from Aalo (Along) through Tato to the Mechuka valley, about 29 km from the border with Tibet. Before the road was built Mechuka was reached mainly by an air force landing ground; the valley has the Samten Yongcha monastery and Memba and Adi villages.

About 180 km; plan a full day. Best from October to April; the monsoon causes frequent landslides and the upper valley gets snow in winter. Carry fuel and cash, as services are sparse.

October to March suits most of the country. The southwest monsoon (June to September) floods the Western Ghats and Kerala, but it is also the main season for Ladakh and Spiti, where high passes are usually open only from June to October.
