About trails in New York

New York State is mostly a road-trip destination here, with long drives that show how quickly the country empties north of the city. The New York to Niagara - Road Trip crosses nearly 670 km of Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes country and the Great Lakes plain, and the Adirondack Northway to Chazy Drive runs I-87 toward Lake Champlain along the eastern edge of the Adirondacks. Out east, the Riverhead Long Island Drive is a short, flat run on the North Fork.

For walking, the Harriman Reeves Brook Loop climbs through the rocky Ramapo highlands of Harriman State Park, an hour from Manhattan, and the Delhi Trails Loop reaches about 630 m in the western Catskills, where forested ridges fold down into the Delaware River headwaters.

Best time to go: Late September and October are ideal, with fall color spreading south from the Adirondacks to the Hudson Valley. Winter brings heavy lake-effect snow near the Great Lakes and in the North Country.
