About trails in Oregon
Oregon's routes run from the wet west side to the dry high desert. The Multnomah Falls Larch Mountain Loop is a hard 19 km climb from the Columbia River Gorge's best-known waterfall into forest above it. In the Cascades, the Vivian Lake Hike in Lane County passes waterfalls on the way to a mountain lake, and cyclists can follow the TransAmerica Trail Oregon Coast Range from Florence through 98 km of forested hills.
East of the mountains, the terrain opens up. The Sky Lakes Wilderness Perimeter Overland Loop is a nearly 400 km drive around the southern Cascades and Crater Lake, reaching about 2,400 m, while the East Fort Rock OHV Expedition Loop explores volcanic country in Deschutes County. Closer to Portland, the Skyline Boulevard and Dixie Mountain Loop mixes paved and gravel roads in the Tualatin Mountains.
- Best time to go
- Late June to October is best for the Cascades and Crater Lake, whose rim roads are snowbound much of the year. West-side trails can be walked year-round but are very wet from November to March.
- Terrain
- Gorge and Coast Range routes are steep, green and often muddy, while the Cascade and high desert routes climb to 2,000 m and more on volcanic soil and pumice. Most trails are moderate.
- Permits & access
- Crater Lake National Park charges an entrance fee, and many national forest trailheads, including those for Vivian Lake, require a Northwest Forest Pass. OHV areas around East Fort Rock require an Oregon ATV operating permit on the vehicle.
