About trails in Minnesota

Minnesota's routes follow its rivers. The Great River Road Frontenac to Stockholm drive runs along the Mississippi where it widens into Lake Pepin, with limestone bluffs above the water on both sides. Longer drives such as Winona to Maple Grove via Wisconsin cross the river valley and farm country between the southeastern bluffs and the Twin Cities.

Cyclists have good paved state trails close to the metro. The Minnesota Valley State Trail Ride from Mendota Heights follows the Minnesota River bottoms near Fort Snelling, and the Brown's Creek State Trail Ride runs on a former rail line into Stillwater and the St. Croix River valley. Both are moderate, and they are suited to relaxed half-day rides.

Best time to go: Late May to early October is the season, with fall color along the Mississippi bluffs usually peaking in early to mid October. Winter is long and cold, and paved trails may not be cleared.
Terrain: Terrain is gentle, topping out around 320 m, with short climbs only where roads leave the river valleys. All routes are easy to moderate.
Permits & access: Paved Minnesota state trails such as Brown's Creek are free to ride. The Great River Road is marked with green pilot's wheel signs, which make it easy to follow.
