Whalers Bay Shore Walk to Neptune's Window, Deception Island

Added on 14 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

A shoreline walk inside the flooded caldera of Deception Island, past the rusting tanks and buildings of the former Norwegian Hektor whaling station and British Base B. The path follows the black volcanic beach of Whalers Bay and climbs at its south-east end to Neptune's Window, a gap in the caldera rim looking out over Bransfield Strait. Whalers Bay is an Antarctic Historic Site and Monument and one of the most visited landing sites in Antarctica.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

About 2.5 km along the mapped path from the north end of the shore to Neptune's Window, roughly an hour each way at a slow pace with stops. Landings happen in the austral summer (roughly November to March) by Zodiac from expedition ships. Do not enter the historic buildings, as they are unstable, and keep off the loose slope at Neptune's Window beyond where your guides indicate.
