Telefon Bay Crater Walk, Deception Island

Added on 14 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

A loop over the young volcanic landscape at Telefon Bay, on the north-west shore of Port Foster inside Deception Island's caldera. The walk climbs ash and cinder slopes to the rim of a crater formed in the island's 1967 eruptions and circles back to the beach. The site has little wildlife but shows the island's recent volcanic activity up close.

General Instructions

The mapped crater loop is about 2.4 km from the beach and takes 1–2 hours with stops. Landings are by Zodiac in the austral summer and depend on weather and ice. The ash slopes are loose and steep in places; stay back from the crater edge and follow the route your expedition staff mark.
