Tugela Gorge Hike

Added on 16 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

A walk into the Amphitheatre, the 5 km wall of basalt cliffs in the northern Drakensberg, following the Tugela River upstream from Thendele into the gorge to the Tunnel, where the river runs between sheer rock walls. On clear days you can see the Tugela Falls, among the highest waterfalls in the world, tumbling off the escarpment. Royal Natal is part of the Maloti-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Lesotho.

Trail Profile

General Instructions

About 12 km return with roughly 350 m of climbing. The last part follows the riverbed, with boulder-hopping and river crossings; after heavy rain the river can rise quickly and the gorge is unsafe. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so start early.
