Tugela Falls Chain Ladder Trail

Added on 10 Oct 2026
Logged by @trailx

The famous Sentinel route onto the Amphitheatre escarpment. From Sentinel Car Park the path contours beneath the Sentinel to the chain ladders. These are steel ladders bolted into the cliff, leading up onto the summit plateau. The path then crosses the plateau to the lip of Tugela Falls, often cited as one of the world's highest waterfalls, which drops nearly 950 m into the Royal Natal valley.

General Instructions

About 13 km return in 5–7 hours. The ladders are exposed and can ice over in winter, so use the alternative gully route if you are not comfortable with heights. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from November to March: start early and stay away from the cliff edge in mist.
