Trans-Mongolian Steppe Route
The classic long drive across the heart of Mongolia, about 1,000 km from Ulaanbaatar to Lake Khövsgöl: west on paved road to Kharkhorin and the Erdene Zuu monastery (founded 1585), on to Tsetserleg, past Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and the Khorgo volcano, then north to Mörön and Khatgal on the shore of Khövsgöl. It mixes paved highway with rough dirt tracks and river crossings in the middle section.
